A Successful Interview

A job interview can be an intimidating event for both the applicant and the interviewer. You are expected to demonstrate your best traits while under the pressure of intense questioning and scrutiny. To ensure that the interview is successful, you should take steps to prepare for the occasion appropriately. Here are a few tips to use during the interview.

How you speak.

Slang words and text language are so commonplace these days that it sometimes find its way into professional settings like an interview. Even if the company is not a buttoned-up workplace and the interviewer is making you feel comfortable, do not use slang and overused phrases in your responses. Speak clearly and use words relevant to the industry and the position to which you are applying.

Don’t regurgitate the company website.

You want to show that you have done your research but you do nothing to show value if all you do is simply repeat what they already know about themselves. Rather explaining what you know in your own words shows that you have thought about the information and have a genuine interest and understanding about what they do.

Keep your information relevant.

During the interview, you may be asked questions about your work ethic, and how you handle conflict and stressful situations. Keep your answers short and relevant. Avoid straying into stories that are way off topic without giving the interviewer insight into your personality, intellectual capacity or leadership skills.

Be amiable.

An interviewee who has a likeable personality will score more points even when there are weaknesses in the resume. The company is hiring you and your personality. So in addition to your skills and qualifications, it is important to demonstrate that you can get along well with others and will not bring negativity or personal issues into the office.

Ask thoughtful questions. At some point during the interview, you may be asked if you have questions. Never say no. Come prepared with thoughtful questions that show that you have given due consideration to the role you will be playing in the company’s overall goal. Use the opportunity to learn more about the position and the short terms goals the company expects the person in this role to accomplish.

Update your CV on a regular basis to add new skills and experience as acquired, especially if they are relevant to the job. This shows the recruiter that you are continually upgrading your skills and competencies. Include also any volunteer work or projects in which you have participated as this shows that you are not afraid to give of your time without compensation or reward.
